From 1940 to Present - Snapshots from the Art Galleries of Milan
ARCHIVIALE_001 is the first chapter of a research meant to piece together more than seventy years of history of private art galleries in Milan, their artistic choices, international relationships, avant-garde events and encounters with artists.
ARCHIVIALE_001 reveals a first repertoire of documents, presenting the guidelines that testify an important and everlasting environment, connecting the public with a cultural community, transgenerational, inclusive and founded on refined professional skills, entrepreneurship, great passion, risk, and foreboding.
Art galleries are fundamentally important places for art history and the cultural prestige of Milan during the XX and XXI centuries, operating in the city before museums and public exhibition spaces. They prove tight-knit collaborations with enduring artists like Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, and Piero Manzoni: it is noticeable how these pioneers’ activities have shown the path and the secrets of the profession to succeeding generations.
Promoted by the Milan Art Community, the network that brings together the most important galleries and institutions in the city of Milan, and hosted in the spaces of the Archivi del Novecento, on the 4th floor of the Museo del Novecento, this project is also the first piece of a collaboration between public institutions and the most interesting private collective initiatives. The exhibition itinerary, developed diachronically, spans different eras and it includes photographic images, invitation cards, small catalogs, papers and correspondence, offering the public a close relationship with different icons and iconographies, graphic styles and writings.
